There are a lot of things that we won’t touch for fear of germs. These places are generally obvious no-no’s: garbage cans, toilet bowls, used silver wear, etc. Just because somethings are obviously dirty and others aren’t… you need to be wary of germs everywhere! We wanted to make sure all of our clients were aware of the most overlooked dirtiest places in order to help you optimize your health and happiness!
First, let’s talk about the kitchen.
SPONGES – Okay, think about this. Where does bacteria thrive the most? In moist, dark places. Naturally, the sponge is a dream land for bacteria. In order to avoid illness and other potential health issues, try to use antibacterial sponges and dish soap. This will help to control the spread of really serious bacteria such as E. Coli and Salmonella. You could also choose to disinfect your sponges at least once a week by soaking them in a bleach solution (easily accessible recipes on the internet). Another disinfecting method is to microwave the sponge on high for two minutes (this method is extremely effective – proven to kill up to 99% of germs!).
CUTTING BOARDS – When you’re cooking, there are many different ingredients that are touching your cutting board. It’s hard to keep designated cutting boards for different types of food, since things are likely to foods are likely to get mixed up in the thick of the action. You should keep your cutting boards close by your sink to rinse between different foods. Also, if you have a wood surface cutting board, you could microwave it (WARNING: DON’T MICROWAVE IT TOO LONG! 40 seconds is good!). In general, it’s recommended to replace cutting boards semi-frequently.
DOOR HANDLES – Any door handle you touch is indubitably infested by all sorts of bacteria and germs. In fact, they are actually one of the most prevalent transmitters of the flu and of the common cold. In order to avoid catching illnesses… Well, you could always wait for people to hold the door for you, right? You could also choose to carry a handkerchief with you on a daily basis.
Next, we’ll talk about on-the-go items.
HEADPHONES – Think about where you store your headphones. They’re probably at risk from being in the bottom of your gym bag. Also, even if you’re just using them for an hour, they’ve acquired bacteria from your ear. If you’re using the type of head phones with rubber nubbins, remove them and soak them in a vinegar and water solution for 10 minutes. If you’re using undetachable headphones, gently clean them with a soap and water mixture.
HANDBAGS – We bet you didn’t know that your handbag is probably one of the dirtiest things you own. In fact, it might even be one of the top three dirtiest things you touch throughout your day. There was even a study that found that many purses have E-Coli on them. This means that you should never put your purse on the bathroom floor, and wipe your purse clean with disinfectants every few days! If your purse is washable, put it through the laundry once a week!
PHONE – People need to become more aware that our phones put us at risk for infection everyday! What is to blame? Our unwashed hands. Wash those hands! You should also wipe your phone with a disinfectant cloth once a day!
There’s another germ hotspot that is a necessary evil in our lives: the doctor’s office.
When you’re sick, you need to go. Let’s be honest though – that’s when you’re also the most vulnerable to other illnesses. In order to protect yourself at this germ factory, there’s measures you’ll have to take when you’re sitting in the waiting room. Take it from us, we know how germy office spaces can get! We clean them!
FIRST, know when it’s okay to go to the office, and when to stay home. During peak flu time, it’s probably not the best idea to go to your doctor’s office, especially since there’s not much that they can do for you anyway. It’s in your best interest to stay home and wait to get better.
Make sure you’re getting sufficient elbow room in the waiting room. Try to be AT LEAST two chairs away from someone who is sneezing and coughing all over the place.
Bring your own entertainment. When you have a long wait in the waiting room, those magazines and books looks more exciting than ever before. However, you never know what kind of illnesses have been circulating through the office, which means those germs are likely to be lurking around the communal reading material. It’s definitely wise to bring your own books and entertainment to avoid getting sick!
Bring your own pen! When you arrive at your medical appointment, you usually need to sign in. Think of HOW MANY people have used that pen before! In order to avoid germs, bring your own pen. This should be common sense. It’s crazy how many people aren’t conscious of very obviously germy items!
Use Hand Sanitizer During and After the Visit. Let’s be realistic – it’s impossible to avoid germs altogether. In an effort to avoid germs at all costs, you’ll probably go slightly insane. All we can do is put forth our best effort, which means being conscious of what we touch in public places. The best that we can do is bring a bottle of hand sanitizer with us and hope for the best.
