As fall nears, it is safe to expect more rainfall in the coming months. Although it may be a refreshing change from the sweltering summertime heat, the wetter weather can also cause a lot of damage to a company’s flooring, especially in carpeted locations. Carpets in high-traffic areas, such as an entranceway to a business, already require regular cleaning due to constant daily use, so the addition of rainwater can produce extremely costly problems if not well-maintained.
It is important to keep carpets in your company as dry as possible when it rains. Using a mat will help stop most of the water but it will still eventually soak into the carpet. Since bacteria and mold grow swiftly in damp settings, it is crucial to make sure that proper cleaning procedures are put into place after it rains (or perhaps even during the day if it rains continuously). Failure to do so will not only damage the carpet’s fibers and lower the lifespan of the carpet in general, but it will also affect the company’s bottom line.
Water can make its way virtually anywhere with the right circumstances, and a heavy rain oftentimes creates an unpleasant mildew odor in wet carpeted areas that can actually drive away potential business. If there is constant rain, employees and/or customers may enter the building and unintentionally trail water through the workplace, especially along busy corridors or under desks. Items such as umbrellas and coats are the main culprits of this. As the day progresses, the top of the carpet may look and feel dry, but there could be trapped moisture underneath that generates mildew, mold and bacteria.
The only truly effective way to kill bacteria and clean carpets as thoroughly as possible would be to have a professional cleaning company use a method known as hot water extraction. Also commonly referred to as steam cleaning, hot water extraction starts with dry soil removal and then preconditioning. Hot water between 100 to 165 degrees (hot enough to kill mold, bacteria and mildew) is then applied to the carpet, and then a solution, typically combined with a detergent, is injected into the carpet. Finally, any soil on the carpet and excess water is removed by wet vacuuming, which takes between 6 to 12 hours to dry.
